Anyone who has read my most recent High-End Beauty Wishlist will know that I’ve been so intrigued over the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara for a while now. I’d been in two minds for absolutely ages about whether to let go of £19 to see whether this mascara really is as amazing as so many people say it is. More importantly I wanted to know if it would match up to my holy grail mascara which just so happens to be an £8.99 drugstore one, my trusty Maybelline Lash Sensational. I’ve bought this mascara over and over again, I’ve tried so many different ones and I always come back to this because it just delivers. So, I (kind of painfully) splashed out the £19 as a treat one day and I wanted to do a comparison to show you whether it’s really worth the extra £10.
I can’t rave enough about this mascara, it’s in my top 5 all-time favourite beauty products and I’m tempted to say I’d be buried with it. As I’ve already said, this is the one I always go back to and I’ve never found a better one. Plus it’s super affordable and lasts absolutely ages without drying out and becoming flakey. The wand is curved and has short plastic bristles that get thinner towards the end of the wand which is perfect for getting every single lash right into the inner corners. It’s also really easy to apply to your bottom lashes without getting product everywhere because it’s not bulky at all. The packaging is a lovely pink colour and is lightweight as well which is perfect for travelling.
This mascara comes packaged in a box that basically promotes all the things it’s meant to do, for example it claims to give your lashes 1,944% more volume which is quite a big claim. It also promises to curl your lashes and lengthen them dramatically with just one coat. The actual mascara tube is really quite weighty which I found a little awkward when it came to applying it, I don’t know whether this is just because I’m so used to the lightweight Maybelline tube so it might just take some getting used to. The wand itself is also quite bulky, it’s a much larger hourglass kind of shape with longer bristles. This made it quite difficult to really get into the inner corner lashes and it was trickier to apply to my bottom lashes as well but again, this could just be because I’ve only used it a couple of times and I need to adapt to it. I do really like how the packaging looks, it’s like the perfect shade of pink.
Most importantly, which one actually looks better when applied? Time for the big comparison!
On the right eye you can see that the Maybelline mascara definitely gives amazing length and definition. It feels really lightweight on my eyes and definitely helps to curl them up. Although I use an eyelash curler anyway before I apply my mascara, I have some pesky eyelashes that grow downwards and still pop out but these are never to be seen when I’m wearing this mascara. I’m wearing three coats of mascara in this photo and you can apply more or less depending on if you want a more natural look or dramatic look which is something I really love about it.
As for the Too Faced mascara on the left eye, it did give me pretty amazing volume. I only have to apply two coats of this mascara so it’s a little quicker to apply as it builds up easier so it’s very convenient in that respect. I did find that although it claims to help curl your lashes, my pesky downwards-growing eyelashes do make a bit of an appearance which is a shame as Maybelline is better for hiding those. The Too Faced mascara did make my eyelashes feel amazingly long though which I’m in love with, it almost looks like lash extensions if you really build the product up.
Overall, I honestly love both of these mascaras. Both of them make my eyelashes feel all fluttery and amazing but I’m afraid that Too Faced hasn’t managed to push my trusty Maybelline mascara completely out of the picture. I’m not sure if I’ll be repurchasing Better Than Sex when I run out of this tube because of the price as I know that I can get one I love just as much for half the money. I do really love how amazing it makes my eyelashes look though. I actually think that if Better Than Sex was a little less bulky and easier to apply, I might love it just that little bit more. Lash Sensational is definitely the winner for me particularly in terms of value for money and ease of application. I love you, Too Faced, but you’re just not bae. I’m sorry, we can still be friends.
